What is General Dentistry?

  Dentistry is the branch of medicine that is involved in the prevention and treatment of conditions of the oral cavity, including the teeth, gums and the maxillofacial area. Dentists in Australia typically study for five years and complete extensive practical training and the dentist’s supporting team typically includes experienced dental assistants, dental hygienists and dental technicians. The majority of dental treatments are carried out to prevent or treat the two most common oral diseases which are  tooth decay and gum disease. Common treatments involve the restoration of teeth (fillings), extractions or the removal of teeth which cannot be saved, scaling of teeth to remove tartar and build-up, and endodontic root canal treatment to treat abscessed teeth.
