As parents, we all want our children to grow up healthy, happy, and confident. Oral health is a big part of that. The habits your kids build now will stay with them for life, which is why it’s so important to start early. At Logan Village Dental, we love helping children feel comfortable at the dentist and giving parents practical tools to keep those little teeth healthy.

First Visits Matter

Your child should have their first dental visit by age one, or when their first tooth appears, whichever comes first. Early visits allow your dentist to:

  • Check teeth are coming through properly

  • Spot any early signs of decay

  • Offer advice on brushing, diet, and habits like thumb-sucking

More importantly, they help your child see the dentist as a friendly place, not something to fear.

Make Brushing Fun

Kids are more likely to brush well if it’s something they enjoy. Try:

  • Letting them choose a toothbrush with their favourite colour or character

  • Using a fun timer or playing a two-minute song

  • Brushing together as a family

  • Turning it into a game (“Let’s find all the sugar bugs!”)

Remember to use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste for children over three, and supervise brushing until at least age eight.

Watch the Snacks and Drinks

Sugary snacks and drinks feed the bacteria that cause tooth decay. Try to limit lollies, soft drinks, and juice, and encourage water between meals. Fresh fruit, vegetables, cheese, and yoghurt make great tooth-friendly snacks.

Regular Check-Ups for Kids

Children’s teeth are more prone to decay because their enamel is thinner. Regular check-ups every six to twelve months help catch problems early, meaning less invasive treatments and happier dental visits.

A Gentle, Friendly Experience

We take the time to explain what we’re doing in child-friendly language, and we celebrate every milestone, whether it’s a cavity-free check-up or a first visit without tears. Book your child’s appointment today and let’s keep those smiles bright and healthy.
