Wisdom Teeth Extractions

Wisdom Teeth Extractions

Your wisdom teeth usually start to erupt (come through) when you are between 17 and 21 years old. Unfortunately this can often present a problem, especially if there is not enough room for them to come through or if they are coming through at an unusual angle. If you are experiencing some difficulty with your wisdom teeth then it is important to have them checked by a dentist.

In some cases, if these problematic wisdom teeth are not removed they may cause significant complications, including:

  • Recurrent infections associated with the site causing other generalised health issues and toothache
  • In severe cases, spreading of this infection can constrict airways causing breathing difficulties
  • Constant halitosis (or bad breath) as a result of recurrent infection
  • Not allowing you to clean the other teeth in the area thoroughly. Often the angle of the impacted wisdom teeth can prevent proper cleaning of adjacent teeth, which then causes these to become decayed. In severe cases they can be so badly damaged that extraction becomes the only option!
  • Inability to clean other teeth in the area thoroughly. Often the angle of the impacted wisdom teeth can prevent proper cleaning of adjacent teeth, which then causes these teeth to become decayed. In severe cases they can be so badly damaged that extraction becomes the only option
  • It is also important to consider that if extraction is required later in life, it will be more difficult for your body to heal after the procedure

In order for you to have your wisdom teeth removed a full mouth OPG x-ray will need to be taken. Your dentist can then see exactly how and where your teeth are positioned and better plan the extraction procedure. Due to their location, wisdom teeth can be more complex to remove than other teeth in your mouth. In some cases your dentist may wish to refer you to an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon. These doctors specialise in the removal of difficult teeth (among other things), to give you the best care possible.

At Logan Village Dental we offer a range of treatment options for dealing with any wisdom teeth problems you or your family members may have.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are wisdom teeth?
Wisdom teeth are the last set of molars to come through, usually appearing in the late teens to early twenties. For some people they grow in normally, but for many there is not enough space in the mouth, which can cause problems.
Why do wisdom teeth need to be removed?
Wisdom teeth may need to be removed if they are impacted, coming through at an angle, or causing pain, infection or damage to nearby teeth. In some cases, they can also make it difficult to clean surrounding areas properly, increasing the risk of decay.
What problems can impacted wisdom teeth cause?
Impacted wisdom teeth can lead to pain, swelling, infections and bad breath. They may also put pressure on neighbouring teeth, making them harder to clean and increasing the risk of decay or long-term damage.
How do I know if I need my wisdom teeth removed?
Common signs include pain at the back of the mouth, swelling around the gums, difficulty opening your mouth fully, or repeated infections in the area. A dental examination and X-ray are needed to confirm whether removal is required.
What is involved in the wisdom teeth removal process?
Your dentist will take an X-ray to assess the position of your wisdom teeth before treatment. Depending on the complexity, removal may be done in the dental chair under local anaesthetic or you may be referred for specialist care.
Is wisdom teeth removal painful?
The procedure is performed under anaesthetic to keep you comfortable. Some soreness, swelling or mild discomfort afterwards is normal and usually improves over a few days with proper aftercare.
How long does recovery take after wisdom teeth removal?
Most people recover within a few days to a week, depending on how complex the extraction was. Your dentist will provide aftercare instructions to help reduce swelling and support healing.
Are all wisdom teeth removed at once?
In some cases all wisdom teeth may be removed in one visit, while in others they may be treated in stages. This depends on their position, complexity and your individual treatment plan.
