What is General Dentistry
What is General Dentistry?
Dentistry is the branch of medicine that is involved in the prevention and treatment of conditions of the oral cavity, including the teeth, gums and the maxillofacial area. Dentists in Australia typically study for five years and complete extensive practical training and the dentist’s supporting team typically includes experienced dental assistants, dental hygienists and dental technicians.
The majority of dental treatments are carried out to prevent or treat the two most common oral diseases which are tooth decay and gum disease. Common treatments involve the restoration of teeth (fillings), extractions or the removal of teeth which cannot be saved, scaling of teeth to remove tartar and build-up, and endodontic root canal treatment to treat abscessed teeth.
It is said that in the 17th century, French Physician Pierre Fauchard founded dental science as it is know today, with comprehensive check ups and the introduction of dental fillings being amongst his developments. However it is interesting to note that the first records of dentistry date back to 7000BC.
With many new and useful advances occurring everyday in the world of dentistry, people now have the opportunity to maintain a strong and healthy set of teeth throughout their lives. It is important to remember that dental health is not just about teeth; modern research has shown good oral health is widely considered necessary for complete overall health.
