White Fillings Only

If you have broken a tooth, have lost a filling or are developing a cavity, white fillings may be an option for you to consider. Not only are they more aesthetically appealing than their older amalgam counterparts, they have many functional benefits as well.

  • Composite (white) fillings are mercury-free and are less sensitive to hot and cold than amalgam fillings
  • Less natural tooth structure is required to be removed in preparation for composite fillings
  • Composites restore most of the original strength of the tooth because it bonds the filling to the tooth and can help prevent fractures in the long-term.
  • Unlike composite fillings, amalgam fillings do not adhere to the tooth. They are held in by the shape of the area the dentist prepares. This makes them bigger, causes significant stress on the remaining natural tooth structure, and often leads to fractures in the long term.

In some children we may recommend fissure sealants, which are another type of white filling material. Fissure sealants are used to prevent decay in the deep grooves of your back teeth. Sometimes the fissures (grooves) can be so narrow not even a toothbrush bristle can clean it properly. Fissure sealants are a preventative treatment option and are quick and painless. They are a tooth coloured resin that is bonded in the grooves of the teeth to prevent decay.
